In 1977, when Stevens changed his name to "Yusuf," he auctioned off all of his guitars for charity and temporarily put his music career on hold in order to devote himself to philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. In 1992, after losing a number of friends to the disease, the singer established the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Since its founding, the foundation has raised over $125 million to support programs in 55 countries that promote prevention, education, elimination of prejudice, and providing services to people who are living with the disease.
